Fund assets decrease by 5.9 percent

Statistical news from Statistics Sweden and Swedish Financial Supervisory Authority 2025-05-23 8.00

At the end of the first quarter of 2025, the total fund assets in Swedish funds amounted to SEK 7,753 billion. This is a decrease of SEK 490 billion, corresponding to 5.9% compared to the previous quarter.

"This is the first quarter with negative development since the third quarter 2023", says Malcolm Svensson Rothmaier, economist at Statistics Sweden’s Financial Market Statistics section.

Important information

From the publication for the fourth quarter of 2024 onwards, the data has been enriched with custodian data to better describe household fund holdings, which were previously partly under financial corporations. Revisions of previously published series have been made up to and including the first quarter of 2024. As a result of this change, Statistics Sweden will not report transactions in fund units for households and financial corporations, as well as households' fund holdings in individual pension savings (IPS).

Development for the first quarter in brief:

  • The investment funds' holdings in shares decreased by 9.0 percent (-SEK 523 billion to SEK 5,315 billion).
  • Net investments in equity funds amounted to SEK -24 billion during the quarter.
  • "This was the first negative quarter since the second quarter 2024. We notice large outflows from North America funds", says Malcolm Svensson Rothmaier.
  • Fund-of-funds followed by other funds had the highest net investments +63 and +16 billion respectively.
  • “In both these fund types we see large inflows in some new funds”, comments Malcolm Svensson Rothmaier.
  • The total net investments in investment funds amounted to SEK 65 billion, a decrease of SEK 35 billion from the previous quarter.

Exchange rate of the krona

The average exchange rate for one Euro during the quarter was SEK 11.23 compared to SEK 11.49 during the previous quarter. The average exchange rate for one US dollar was SEK 10.68 compared to SEK 10.76 in the previous quarter.

Number of active funds in the statistics

During the fourth quarter, eight previously active funds were discontinued or absorbed. In total, there were 849 active Swedish funds, four less than in the previous quarter.
