Market turbulence is evident in insurance and occupational pension companies’ capital investments

During the first quarter of 2025, the market value of insurance and occupational pension companies' investment assets decreased to SEK 7,646 billion, from SEK 7,836 billion at the end of the previous quarter. Compared to the first quarter of 2024, the market value has increased 1,5 percent from SEK 7,530 billion.

The quarter in brief

  • ”Market turbulence over the past quarter has led to lower capital investments, especially in shares”, says Malcolm Svensson Rothmaier, economist at Statistics Sweden.
  • In the first quarter of 2025, insurance and occupational pension companies' holdings in shares and participations decreased from SEK 5,763 billion to SEK 5,441 billion, equivalent to a decrease of 5,6 percent.

Life insurance and occupational pension companies

  • Decrease in foreign shares: Foreign shares increased from SEK 924 billion to SEK 816 billion.

Non-life insurance companies

  • Decrease in shares: Shares and participations decreased from SEK 408 billion to SEK 391 billion.

Premiums and claims paid from non-life insurance companies

  • Some increase in business claims paid: Claims paid in the class business and houseowners insurance increased to SEK 2.03 billion in the first quarter of 2025, from SEK 2.00 billion in the same quarter 2024. At the same time the premiums for these insurances have decreased to SEK 6.13 from 6.21 billion.
  • ”The developments over the past quarter have been relatively calm after these premiums and payouts in 2024 increased at the fastest pace since 2019”, says Malcolm Svensson Rothmaier.
