Recovery in insurance and occupational pension companies’ capital investments

During the second quarter of 2025, the market value of insurance and occupational pension companies' investment assets increased to SEK 7,862 billion, from SEK 7,647 billion at the end of the previous quarter. Compared to the second quarter of 2024, the market value has increased 3.2 percent from SEK 7,615 billion.

The quarter in brief

  • ”There was a recovery over the past quarter with higher capital investments, especially in shares, after a weak start of the year which was characterized by anxiety”, says Malcolm Svensson Rothmaier, economist at Statistics Sweden.
  • In the second quarter of 2025, insurance and occupational pension companies' holdings in shares and participations increased from SEK 5,441 billion to SEK 5,689 billion, equivalent to an increase of 4.6 percent (-5.6% in the first quarter).

Life insurance and occupational pension companies

  • Recovery in foreign shares: Foreign shares increased from SEK 816 billion to SEK 896 billion (924 billion at the turn of the year).

Non-life insurance companies

  • Recovery in shares: Shares and participations increased from SEK 391 billion to SEK 400 billion (408 billion at the turn of the year).

Premiums and claims paid from non-life insurance companies

  • Decrease in business claims paid: Claims paid in the class business and houseowners insurance decreased to SEK 4.7 billion in the first half of 2025, from SEK 5.3 billion in the corresponding period 2024. At the same time the premiums for these insurances have increased to SEK 9.8 from 9.7 billion.
  • ”Payouts have fallen back and the development in premiums have been relatively calm after both during the full year 2024 rose at the fastest pace since 2019”, says Malcolm Svensson Rothmaier.
  • Decrease in home insurance claims paid: Claims paid in the class householders and homeowners insurance decreased to SEK 5.6 billion in the first half of 2025, from SEK 6.4 billion in the corresponding period 2024. At the same time the premiums for these insurances have increased to SEK 9.8 from 9.1 billion.
  • ”The trend for home insurance is the same as for the business insurances, with a decline in payouts and an increase in premiums”, says Malcolm Svensson Rothmaier.
