Record high liabilities in debt securities of Swedish enterprises

At the end of August, total liabilities in debt securities amounted to SEK 9 088 billion. That is the highest recorded number since 2013, when compilation of total securities issues began. This increase is mainly due to increased borrowing for monetary financial institutions during the month, both for bonds and money market instruments.
Developments in August 2022 in brief
Increased liabilities in both bonds and money market instruments
- At the end of August, liabilities in debt securities amounted to SEK
9 088 billion, of which bonds accounted for 79 percent and money market instruments accounted for 21 percent. - Liabilities in debt securities increased for both bonds and money market instruments respectively by SEK 132 billion and SEK 55 billion. This increase is mainly due to increased net borrowing in debt securities and the effect of a weaker Swedish krona.
- The annual growth rate for total debt securities liabilities was 4.8 percent, up by 1.6 percentage points compared with July.
Increased borrowing for monetary financial institutions
- In August, monetary financial institutions accounted for the largest increase in liabilities in debt securities, at SEK 135 billion. Both bonds and money market instruments increased respectively by SEK 85 billion and SEK 51 billion. The increase is mainly because of a stronger US dollar.
- Behind the increase in monetary financial institutions, is mainly non secured instruments, which increased by SEK 101 billion.
Maturity structure
- Debt securities valued at SEK 2 289 billion will reach maturity within six months. Just over half are denominated in foreign currency, mainly US dollars and euros.
- Unsecured debt securities from monetary financial institutions represent the majority of the maturity value within six months, SEK 1 093 billion, in which the majority is issued in foreign currency, mainly US dollars. For other sectors, the maturity value is mainly in Swedish kronor.
