Decreased borrowing in debt securities

At the end of August, total liabilities in debt securities amounted to SEK 9 410 billion, down by SEK 25 billion from July.
– The decrease is primarily due to decreased borrowing in debt securities denominated in foreign currencies, with the government accounting for the largest decrease, says Hanna Helgesson, economist at Statistics Sweden.
Developments in August 2025 in brief
Increased liabilities in bonds and decreased liabilities in money market instruments
- At the end of August, total liabilities in debt securities amounted to SEK 9 410 billion, of which bonds accounted for 80 percent and money market instruments accounted for 20 percent.
- During the month, liabilities increased in bonds by SEK 45 billion and decreased in money market instruments by SEK 70 billion.
- The liabilities denominated in Swedish Crowns increased by a total of SEK 65 billion while it decreased by SEK 90 billion in liabilities denominated in foreign currencies.
- The annual growth rate for total debt securities liabilities was -0.5 percent in August, an increase by 1.3 percentage points from July.
Decreased borrowing by the government
- In August, the government (through Swedish National Debt Office) accounted for the largest decrease in debt securities, and decreased their liabilities by SEK 56 billion.
- Sveriges Riksbank increased their liabilities by SEK 41 billion.

Maturity structure
- Debt securities valued at SEK 1 587 billion will reach maturity within six months, excluding certificates issued by Sveriges Riksbank. 60 percent of these are denominated in foreign currency.
- Debt securities from monetary financial institutions accounted for 68 percent of the total maturity value within six months (excluding certificates issued by Sveriges Riksbank), of which the majority is issued in foreign currency.

Green debt securities
- Green debt securities amounted to SEK 972 billion in August, down by SEK 1 billion from July.
- Monetary financial institutions accounted for the largest decrease in green debt securities during the month, with a decrease of SEK 2 billion.
- Monetary financial institutions are still the largest issuer of green debt securites, in total SEK 435. However, local government issue the largest share of green debt securities in relation to their total outstanding amount (37 percent).
