Decreased borrowing in debt securities

At the end of December, total liabilities in debt securities amounted to SEK 9 105 billion, down by SEK 239 billion from November.
– A stronger Swedish Krona contributed to a decrease in debt securities denominated in foreign currency in December, says Hanna Helgesson, economist at Statistics Sweden.
Developments in December 2025 in brief
Decreased liabilities in money market instruments and bonds
- At the end of December, total liabilities in debt securities amounted to SEK 9 105 billion, of which bonds accounted for 83 percent and money market instruments accounted for 17 percent.
- During the month, liabilities decreased in both money market instruments and bonds by SEK 129 billion and SEK 110 billion respectively.
- The liabilities denominated in Swedish Kronas decreased by a total of SEK 97 billion, while it decreased in liabilities denominated in foreign currencies by SEK 142 billion.
- The annual growth rate for total debt securities liabilities was -1.1 percent in December, an increase by 0.2 percentage points from November.
Decreased borrowing by monetary financial institutions in December
- In December, monetary financial institutions accounted for the largest decrease in debt securities, with total debt falling by SEK 171 billion. Stronger Swedish Krona in relation to euro and dollar contributed SEK 42 billion of this decrease.
- Sveriges Riksbank and non‑financial corporations also reduced their debt securities in December by SEK 45 billion and SEK 26 billion, respectively.

Maturity structure
- Debt securities valued at SEK 1 556 billion will reach maturity within six months, excluding certificates issued by Sveriges Riksbank. Around 61 percent of these are denominated in foreign currency.
- Debt securities from monetary financial institutions accounted for 60 percent of the total maturity value within six months (excluding certificates issued by Sveriges Riksbank), of which the majority is issued in foreign currency.

Green debt securities
- Green debt securities amounted to SEK 1 005 billion in December, down by SEK 19 billion from November.
- Monetary financial institutions accounted for the largest decrease during the month.
- Monetary financial institutions are still the largest issuer of green debt securities, in total SEK 473 billion. However, local government issue the largest share of green debt securities in relation to their total outstanding amount (37 percent).
