Increased borrowing in debt securities

At the end of June, total liabilities in debt securities amounted to SEK 9 509 billion, up by SEK 68 billion from May.

Developments in June 2026 in brief

Increased liabilities in bonds and decreased liabilities in money market instruments

  • At the end of June, total liabilities in debt securities amounted to SEK 9 509 billion, of which bonds accounted for 82 percent and money market instruments accounted for 18 percent. 
  • During the month, liabilities decreased in money market instruments by SEK 29 billion, and the liabilities in bonds increased by SEK 98 billion.
  • The liabilities denominated in Swedish Krona decreased by a total of SEK 83 billion, while it increased in liabilities denominated in foreign currencies by SEK 151 billion. The increase in foreign currency was mainly explained by the depreciation of the Swedish krona against the euro and the U.S. dollar during the month.
  • The annual growth rate for total debt securities liabilities was 0.6 percent in June, a decrease by 0.1 percentage points from May. 

Increased borrowing by the government in June

  • In June, it was the government (through Swedish National Debt Office) that accounted for the largest increase in debt securities, with total debt increased by SEK 52 billion.
  • Monetary financial institutions also increased their debt securities by SEK 39 billion during the same period.
  • However, Sveriges Riksbank decreased their debt securities in June by SEK 43 billion.

Maturity structure

  • Debt securities valued at SEK 1 757 billion will reach maturity within six months, excluding certificates issued by Sveriges Riksbank. Approximately 61 percent of these securities are denominated in foreign currency.
  • Debt securities from monetary financial institutions accounted for 66 percent of the total maturity value within six months (excluding certificates issued by Sveriges Riksbank), of which the majority is issued in foreign currency.

Green debt securities

  • Green debt securities amounted to SEK 1 112 billion in June, down by SEK 1 billion from May.
  • Non-financial corporations accounted for the largest increase during the month, up by SEK 2 billion. 
  • Monetary financial institutions are still the largest issuer of green debt securities, in total of SEK 515 billion. However, local government issue the largest share of green debt securities in relation to their total outstanding amount (42 percent).
