Borrowing in debt securities increased

Total Swedish liabilities in debt securities amounted to SEK 8 497 billion at the end of May, up by SEK 26 billion from the previous month. This increase is mainly due to increased liabilities in debt securities denominated in Swedish kronor during the month.

Developments in May 2021 in brief

Borrowing increased in securities denominated in Swedish kronor

• In May, liabilities in debt securities decreased by SEK 51 billion in bonds, while liabilities increased by SEK 77 billion in money market instruments.
• For debt securities denominated in Swedish kronor, liabilities increased for both bonds and money market instruments by SEK 9 billion and SEK 93 billion, respectively.
• For securities denominated in US dollars, on the other hand, liabilities decreased for both bonds and money market instruments, by SEK 51 billion and SEK 29 billion, respectively.
• At the end of May, bonds and money market instruments accounted for 80 percent and 20 percent, respectively, of total liabilities in debt securities.
• The year-on-year change for total liabilities in debt securities was 6.0 percent, an increase of 1.8 percentage points compared with April.

Riksbank increased liabilities in money market instruments

• In May, the Riksbank increased borrowing in money market instruments denominated in Swedish kronor by SEK 92 billion. Other financial enterprises and central government (through the Swedish National Debt Office) also increased liabilities, by SEK 11 billion and SEK 4 billion, respectively.
• Other sectors decreased liabilities in May, mainly monetary financial institutions, which decreased liabilities in both secured and unsecured securities, by SEK 25 billion and SEK 49 billion, respectively.

Maturity structure

  • Debt securities valued at SEK 1 957 billion will reach maturity within six months. Just over half of this amount, SEK 1 018 billion, was denominated in foreign currency, mainly in US dollars and euros.
  • Unsecured debt securities from monetary financial institutions accounted for the largest part of the maturity value within six months, SEK 931 billion, in which the larger part was issued in foreign currency, mainly in US dollars. In the other sectors, the maturity value is mainly held in Swedish kronor.
