Borrowing in debt securities decreased in May

Total Swedish liabilities in debt securities amounted to SEK 8 947 billion at the end of May, down by SEK 52 billion from April. This decrease is mainly due to debt securities denominated in Swedish kronor.

Developments in May 2022 in brief

Liabilities in money market instruments decreased

  • At the end of May, bonds accounted for 80 percent and money market instruments accounted for 20 percent of total liabilities in debt securities, which amounted to SEK 8 947 billion.
  • Liabilities in debt securities increased in bonds by SEK 6 billion while it decreased in money market instruments by SEK 58 billion.
  • The total decrease of liabilities in debt securities by SEK 52 billion is mainly due to securitites denominated in Swedish kronor decreasing by SEK 93 billion during the month. This applies to both money market instruments, which decreased by SEK 3 billion, and bonds, which decreased by SEK 89 billion. A somewhat counteracting effect was that securities denominated in euros increased during the month.
  • The annual growth rate for total liabilities in debt securities was 6 percent, a decrease of 0.9 percentage points from April.

Decreased borrowing for the central government

  • The central government was mainly behind the decrease in May, where liabilities in debt securities decreased by SEK 122 billion.
  • This was somewhat offset by an increase of SEK 62 billion in unsecured debt securities from monetary financial institutions.

Maturity structure

  • Debt securities valued at SEK 2 335 billion will reach maturity within six months. Approximately 53 percent are denominated in foreign currency, mainly US dollars and euros.
  • Debt securities from monetary financial institutions accounted for more than half of the total maturity value within six months, SEK 1 330 billion.
