Borrowing in debt securities decreased

At the end of November, total liabilities in debt securities amounted to SEK 9 688 billion, down by SEK 281 billion from October. This decrease is mainly due to a stronger Swedish crown during November.

Developments in November 2023 in brief

Decreased liabilities in both money market instruments and bonds

  • At the end of November, total liabilities in debt securities amounted to SEK 9 688 billion, of which bonds accounted for 77 percent and money market instruments accounted for 23 percent.
  • During the month, liabilities decreased in both bonds and money markets instruments by SEK 206 billion and by SEK 75 billion respectively.
  • The liabilities decreased for both securities denominated in Swedish kronor by 87 billion, and for securities denominated in foreign currency. For securities denominated in dollars, the debt decreased by SEK 149 billion and for securities denominated in euros by SEK 44 billion. This is largely due to the strengthening of the Swedish crown during November.
  • The annual growth rate for total debt securities liabilities was 4,4 percent in November, down by 3,4 percentage points compared with October.

Monetary financial institutions decreased borrowing during November

  • In November, monetary financial institutions accounted for the largest decrease in liabilities in debt securities, decreasing by SEK 208 billion in total.
  • Liabilities in covered bond decreased by SEK 19 billion and in non-covered debt securities by SEK 189 billion.
  • The othe sectors also decreased their liabiliteies during the month.

Maturity structure

  • Debt securities valued at SEK 1 484 billion will reach maturity within six months excluding certificates issued by Sveriges Riksbank. Around 70 percent of these are denominated in foreign currency, mainly US dollars and euros.
  • Debt securities from monetary financial institutions accounted for nearly 70 percent of the total maturity value within six months (excluding certificates issued by Sveriges Riksbank), SEK 1 017 billion, in which the majority is issued in foreign currency.
