Borrowing in debt securities decreased

At the end of October, total liabilities in debt securities amounted to SEK 9 946 billion, up by SEK 79 billion from September. This increase is mainly due to a weaker Swedish crown, primarly compared to the euro and the dollar.

Developments in October 2023 in brief

Decreased liabilities in money market instruments and increased in bonds

  • At the end of October, total liabilities in debt securities amounted to SEK 9 946 billion, of which bonds accounted for 77 percent and money market instruments accounted for 23 percent.
  • During the month, liabilities decreased in money markets instruments by SEK 12 billion and in bonds by SEK 90 billion.
  • This increase is mainly due to increased borrowing in debt securities denominated in foreign currency, where the debt increased by SEK 83 billion during October.
  • The annual growth rate for total debt securities liabilities was 7.6 percent, down by 1.1 percentage points compared with September.

Monetary financial institutions decreased borrowing

  • In October, monetary financial institutions accounted for the largest increase in liabilities in debt securities, increasing by SEK 90 billion in total.
  • Liabilities in both covered bond and non-covered debt securities increased by SEK 18 billion and SEK 71 billion respectively.
  • It was mainly due to increased liabilities in debt securities denominated in foreign currency, a total of SEK 75 billion. This increase was primarly an effect of a weakened Swedish crown compared to the Euro and the US Dollar, but also due to issued securities denominated in dollar.

Maturity structure

  • Debt securities valued at SEK 1 690 billion will reach maturity within six months excluding certificates issued by Sveriges Riksbank. Just over half are denominated in foreign currency, mainly US dollars.
  • Debt securities from monetary financial institutions accounted for nearly 70 percent of the total maturity value within six months (excluding certificates issued by Sveriges Riksbank), SEK 1 173 billion, in which the majority is issued in US dollar.
