Older people account for a growing portion of share wealth
At the end of 2025, households' total share wealth amounted to SEK 1,498 billion, which is an increase of SEK 151 billion compared with the previous year. Of this, 90% was owned by people aged 45 or over.
The fact that older age groups gradually hold an increasing share of share wealth is a long-standing trend that has been going on for several years. At the end of 2007, people over the age of 45 accounted for 82 percent of the share wealth, a share that would have risen to 90 percent by 2025.
Older people's portion of share wealth increases
Investment patterns differ between age groups, as shown by how they distribute their ownership between different stock lists. People who are 45 years of age or older have a relatively larger ownership stake in large cap companies compared to younger people, which indicates a tendency to prioritize large and established companies. The most prominent difference is found in Spotlight Stock Market, where the younger ones own 26 percent while the older ones account for the remaining 74 percent.

As capital preservation becomes more important as you approach or are at retirement age, the value of predictability and lower risk increases, making large caps more attractive than more volatile growth companies that are often found outside the large-cap list.
Younger investors, on the other hand, have a longer time horizon and can therefore handle temporary market downturns. This means that they can to a greater extent seek out other stock lists, where smaller companies often offer higher growth potential but also greater risk. Younger investors often have less capital and often invest in smaller amounts. Older investors have more capital and are more likely to invest in larger, stable companies, which in turn drives up their share of total stock wealth.
Foreign countries remain the largest ownership sector
At the end of December 2025, the foreign sector constituted the largest holding sector in the Swedish stock market, with a total shareholding of SEK 4,794 billion. This corresponds to 37 percent of the total market value of companies listed on a Swedish marketplace. Swedish financial corporations constituted the second largest ownership sector with a share of 32 percent, with investment funds and investment companies accounting for the largest share of ownership in this ownership sector.

Definitions and explanations
Information on final owners is not available for nominee-registered ownership through Swedish nominees if the holding is less than 501 shares in a company. Because of this, these holdings are not included when households’ shareholdings are broken down by income and age. To address this, the difference between the number of shares issued and the number of securities with a known final-owner is distributed between the household sector and non-profit institutions serving households. At the end of December 2025, the imputed share in the household sector amounted to 15 percent of the total market value.
Information foreign managers end customers is not available, as these are not included in the public register of shareholders.
Swedish marketplaces refer to OMX Stockholm, Spotlight Stock Market, NGM and First North. Unlisted classes of shares in listed companies are also included. Shares in foreign companies listed on the aforementioned marketplaces are included in the statistics from the year 2000 onwards.
