New construction and conversion led to 47 635 new dwellings in 2024

In 2024, 38 851 dwellings in total were completed in newly built multi-dwelling buildings. This is 27 percent less than last year.
In one-or two-dwelling buildings, an additional 6 624 dwellings were completed, which is 46 percent down than in 2023. In addition, 2 160 dwellings were completed through conversion of existing multi-dwelling buildings. New construction and conversion led to 47 635 new dwellings in total in 2024, which is 30 percent down than a year ago.
Most new dwellings per inhabitant in Uppsala County
In 19 out of 21 counties in Sweden, less dwellings were completed through new construction in 2024 than in the previous year. Fifty-four percent of the completed dwellings are located in the three metropolitan areas.
Uppsala County accounted for the highest number of completed dwellings per 1 000 inhabitants, at 10.3 completed dwellings per 1 000 inhabitants. In Jämtlands County, there were 1.0 completed dwellings per 1 000 inhabitants, which was the lowest number of completed dwellings in Sweden. The corresponding figure for the country as a whole was 4.3 completed dwellings per 1 000 inhabitants.

Most new rented dwellings in multi-dwelling buildings
From 2014, most of the completed new dwellings in multi-dwelling buildings have been rented dwellings with the exception of 2017. This year sixty-two percent were rented dwellings, thirty-seven percent were tenant-owned an one percent owner-occupied dwellings.

In one- or two-dwelling buildings, owner-occupancy is the most common form, with sseventeen percent being tenant-owned in 2024, compared to twenty-seven percent in 2023.
More small dwellings being constructed
The most common size of dwelling in multi-dwelling buildings that were completed was a dwelling with two rooms and a kitchen; there were 13 654 dwellings of this size, which is more than one in three dwellings.
The average useful floor space for a dwelling is 54 square metres in new construction of multi-dwelling buildings and 151 square metres in one- or two-dwelling buildings.
Definitions and explanations
In the final annual statistics on completed dwellings, certain objects may be attributed to an incorrect reference year if completion data is received after the time of publication. For 2024, this affects approximately eleven percent.
A dwelling refers to a unit intended fully or to a significant extent for residential use, regardless of the type of building in which it is located. Therefore, residences in one- or two-dwelling buildings are also defined as dwellings.
One- or two-dwelling building refers to a detached one- or two-dwelling building, as well as semi-detached, terraced and linked buildings (excluding second homes).
Multi-dwelling building refers to a building with three or more dwellings, including balcony access buildings.
Conversion refers to the net of dwellings added and removed through conversion or altered use.
Data for 2024 have been corrected for Gothenburg municipality, with a decrease of 389 dwellings in multi-dwelling buildings.
