Building rate unchanged in the first quarter of 2020

Preliminary figures show that construction of roughly 11 900 dwellings was started in new buildings during the first quarter of 2019. This is almost the same amount as in the same period last year, when construction of 11 800 dwellings was started.

Approximately 9 600 of new dwellings were located in multi-dwelling buildings, which is 3 percent more than in same period a year ago. Among one- or two-dwelling buildings, construction of 2 300 dwellings was started in the first quarter, which is around 200 fewer than a year ago.

In addition, conversion of multi-dwelling buildings was begun in 550 dwellings in the first quarter of 2020, compared with 623 dwellings in the corresponding period in 2019.

The 2020 figures on new construction have been adjusted upwards by one percent, which is the average delay in the corresponding period in recent years. The 2020 figures on conversion have been adjusted upwards by 54 percent.

Definitions and explanations

A dwelling is a room or suite of rooms intended for private habitation.

One- or two-dwelling building refers to a detached one- or two-dwelling buildings, as well as semi-detached, row and linked buildings.

Multi-dwelling buildings refers to buildings with three or more apartments, including balcony access housing.

Conversion refers to the net of dwellings added and removed through conversion or changes in usages of multi-dwelling buildings.
