Construction of new dwellings decreased

According to preliminary figures, construction of roughly 39 100 dwellings was started in new buildings in the first three quarters of 2018. This is a decrease of 16 percent compared with the same period in 2017, when construction of 46 700 dwellings was started.

In the first three quarters of 2018, construction of 30 700 dwellings in multi-dwelling buildings was started, down 18 percent compared with the same period in 2017.Construction of 8 400 dwellings in one- or two-dwelling buildings was started, down by 11 percent compared with same period in 2017.

In addition, conversion of multi-dwelling buildings resulted in approximately 1 800 additional dwellings in 2018, compared with 3 230 dwellings in the same period in 2017.

The 2018 figures on new construction have been adjusted upwards by 6 percent, which is the average delay in reporting for the last years. The 2018 figures on conversion have been adjusted upwards by 29 percent.

Due to the time lag in reporting, the figures for the most recent year are underestimated. In the past year, this underestimation was about 18 percent.

Definitions and explanations

A dwelling refers to a room or a number of rooms intended for private habitation.

One- or two-dwelling building refers to detached one- or two-dwelling buildings as well as semi-detached, row and linked buildings.

Multi-dwelling building refers to buildings with three or more apartments, including balcony access housing.

Conversion refers to the difference between dwellings added and removed through conversion or changes in usage of multi-dwelling buildings.
