64 000 new dwellings started in new construction during 2017

Preliminary 2017 figures show that the construction of roughly 64 000 dwellings began in new buildings. This is an increase of 8 percent compared with 2016, when construction of 59 518 dwellings started.

Dwellings in multi-dwelling buildings provided the largest contribution to the increase; in 2017, construction of 50 750 dwellings was started, up 9 percent from the same period in 2016. Approximately 51 percent of these new apartments are rental dwellings.

In one- or two-dwelling buildings, construction of 13 250 dwellings was started, almost as many as in the same period in 2016.

The 2017 figures on new construction have been adjusted upwards by 4 percent, which is the reporting delay for the last year.

A dwelling is a room or number of rooms intended for private habitation.

One- or two-dwelling building means detached one- or two-dwelling buildings as well as semi-detached, row and linked buildings.

Multi-dwelling building means buildings with three or more apartments, including balcony access housing.
