53 000 new dwellings started in new construction during 2018

According to preliminary figures for 2018, the construction of roughly 53 000 dwellings was started in new buildings. This is a decrease of 16 percent compared with 2017, when construction of 62 879 dwellings was started.
The construction of 42 250 dwellings in multi-dwelling buildings was started during 2018, down 15 percent compared with 2017. Among these dwellings, 60 percent are rented, compared to 50 percent in 2017.
The construction of 10 750 dwellings was started in one- or two-dwelling buildings, down 17 percent compared with the same period in 2017.
In addition, conversion of multi-dwelling buildings resulted in approximately 3 000 dwellings in 2018, compared with 3 600 dwellings in 2017.
The 2018 figures for new construction have been adjusted upwards by 3 percent, which is the average delay in reporting in the corresponding period last year. The 2018 figures for conversion have been adjusted upwards by 17 percent.

A dwelling refers to a room or a number of rooms intended for private habitation.
One- or two-dwelling building refers to detached one- or two-dwelling buildings as well as semi-detached, row and linked buildings.
Multi-dwelling building refers to buildings with three or more apartments, including balcony access housing.
