Just under 49 000 new dwellings started in new construction during 2019

According to preliminary figures for 2019, the construction of roughly 49 000 dwellings was started in new buildings. This is 7 percent less than in 2018, when construction of 52 654 dwellings was started.
The construction of 39 000 dwellings in multi-dwelling buildings was started in 2019, which is 6 percent less than in 2018. Among these dwellings, 62 percent are rented, compared to 60 percent in 2018.
The construction of 9 850 dwellings started in one- or two-dwelling buildings, 12 percent less than a year earlier.
In addition, conversion of multi-dwelling buildings resulted in approximately 3 400 dwellings in 2019, compared with 3 100 dwellings in 2018.
The 2019 figures on new construction have been adjusted upward by 3 percent, which is the average delay in reporting for the previous year. The 2019 figures on conversion have been adjusted upward by 18 percent.

Definitions and explanations
A dwelling refers to a room or a number of rooms intended for private habitation.
One- or two-dwelling building refers to detached one- or two-dwelling buildings as well as semi-detached, row and linked buildings.
Multi-dwelling building refers to buildings with three or more apartments, including balcony access housing.
