Increase in gross pay and number of gainfully employed

Between 2013 and 2014 the number of gainfully employed persons rose by 0.8 percent to 4 655 800. Women constituted 48 percent and men 52 percent of the total number of gainfully employed persons.

Gross pay increased by 3.7 percent compared with the previous year and amounted to SEK 1 493 billion in 2014. Women's pay increased by 4.2 percent and men's pay increased by 3.4 percent.

The number of gainfully employed persons increased the most in Stockholm County. During the same period, gross pay in the county rose by 4.5 percent. The lowest increase in gross pay was in Värmland County at 2.1 percent. Värmland was also the county where the number of gainfully employed persons decreased the most at -0.3 percent.

Increase in gross pay in all economic sectors

Between 2013 and 2014 all economic sectors had an increase in gross pay. Gross pay increased the most within Hotel and restaurants by 6.6 percent, followed by Health and social care (4.8 percent) and Property services (4.6 percent). The largest increase in the number of gainfully employed persons occurred in Electricity, gas and water supply and environmental activities, 2.3 percent.

The largest reduction in the number of gainfully employed persons occurred within Manufacturing, mining and quarrying, 1.6 percent. Given this decrease, Wholesale and retail trade has surpassed Manufacturing, mining and quarrying as the second largest economic sector after Health and social care. Manufacturing, mining and quarrying was also the sector with the lowest increase in gross pay at 1.3 percent.

Örebro is the fourth largest local labour market

Between 2013 and 2014, the local labour market Karlskoga disappeared and was included within the Örebro local labour market following the 2014 classification. With this change, the Örebro labour market became the fourth largest local labour market after the three largest local labour markets (Stockholm-Solna, Malmö-Lund and Gothenburg). It consisted of 11 municipalities and a daytime population of 128 900 gainfully employed persons.

Sweden's smallest local labour market was Åsele, which had a daytime, gainfully employed population of 1 100 persons in 2014. Among the total 73 local labour markets, 27 consisted of only one municipality.
