Lowest proportion of full-time employed in Accommodation and food services

The number of employed people increased mainly in Financial operations, business services in the period from 2006 to 2015 and this economic activity had the highest number of employed people in 2015. In 2015, Human health and social work activities was the second largest economic activity. Among employed people in Construction, 93.0 percent were full-time employed, and this economic activity had the highest proportion of full-time employed people in 2015. Accommodation and food services was the economic activity with the lowest proportion and reported 59.0 percent full-time employed people.

The theme report on the Labour Force Surveys for the third quarter 2016 gives a description of the development of employed persons and employees by economic activity between 2006 and 2015. The report also presents changes in distribution in the groups.

Most employed in Financial operations, business services

The number of employed people aged 15 to 74 increased from 4 429 400 in 2006 to 4 837 200 in 2015. In 2015, the number of employed men amounted to 2 530 200 and the number of employed women amounted to 2 307 000.

In 2006, Human health and social work activities employed 702 700 people and was the economic activity that employed the most people. In 2015, Human health and social work activities employed 736 900 people and was the second largest economic activity.

In 2006, the Manufacturing, mining and quarrying, energy and environment economic activity employed the second highest number of people. The number of employed people in the activity dropped from 663 500 in 2006 to 561 600 in 2015, and is now the third largest activity. The number of employed people in Manufacturing, mining and quarrying, energy and environment decreased mainly in 2009, in connection with the financial crisis, and has not recovered since then. Instead, the number of employed people increased mainly in Financial operations, business services in the period from 2006 to 2015. In this economic activity, the number of employed people increased from 621 500 to 802 800 and was the economic activity with the highest number of employed people in 2015.

In 2015, the Trade economic activity had most young employed people aged 15 to 24, followed by Financial operations, business services. In Trade, 94 400 people aged 15 to 24 were employed, which corresponds to 18.2 percent of all young employed people. The age groups 25 to 54 years and 55 to 74 years reported the highest number of employed people in the economic activities Financial operations, business services and Human health and social work activities in 2015. In Financial operations, business services, employed people aged 25 to 54 amounted to 570 400, which corresponds to 17.3 percent of all employed people in that age group. In 2015, 190 400 people aged 55 to 74 were employed in the economic activity Human health and social work activities, which corresponds to 18.5 percent. Among men in age groups 25 to 54 years and 55 to 74 years, the largest numbers were employed in Financial operations, business services and Manufacturing, mining and quarrying, energy and environment. Among women in these age groups, the largest number was employed in the economic activity Human health and social work activities.

The number of foreign-born people employed in Human health and social work activities increased from 105 800 to 162 200 between 2006 and 2015. About one in five foreign-born employed people worked in this economic activity in 2015. In 2015, Accommodation and food services was the economic activity with the highest proportion of foreign-born people, at 36.7 percent.

Number of employees in the private sector increased in Human health and social work activities

In 2015, the Manufacturing, mining and quarrying, energy and environment economic activity had the highest proportion of permanent employees, followed by Information and communication and Construction. Among employees in Manufacturing, mining and quarrying, energy and environment, 91.9 percent were permanent employees. The Accommodation and food services economic activity had the highest proportion of temporary employees in 2015, followed by Personal and cultural services. Among employed people in Accommodation and food services, 38.8 percent were temporary employees.

The Human health and social work activities had the highest number of municipal employees during the entire time period. The number of municipal employees in this economic activity amounted to 577 900 in 2006 and 538 600 in 2015. The number of municipal employees in the economic activity decreased mainly in 2009 and 2012. However, between 2006 and 2015, the number of employees in the private sector increased in Human health and social work activities. In 2006, there were 103 700 employees and nine years later there were 174 700.

Largest proportion full-time employed in Construction

In Construction, 93.0 percent of employed people had an agreed working time of 35 hours or more per week in 2015. This can be compared with the proportion of full-time employed people in Accommodation and food services, 59.0 percent, which was the lowest proportion among economic activities in 2015. In the period from 2006 to 2015, Accommodation and food services, Personal and cultural services and Human health and social work activities reported the lowest proportions of full-time employed people.

The proportion of employed people with an agreed working time of 20 to 34 hours per week was highest in Human health and social work activities in the years 2006 to 2015. The report shows that this proportion had a declining development between 2011 and 2014, while the proportion of full-time employed people increased. In 2015, employed people with an agreed working time of 20 to 34 hours per week comprised 30.0 percent of the economic activity. Among women employed in Human health and social work activities in 2015, 33.2 percent worked between 20 and 34 hours per week. The corresponding proportion among men was 17.4 percent.
