The number of temporary employees is decreasing

In November 2023, the number of employed people amounted to 5 260 000, not seasonally adjusted. The number of temporary employees decreased by 77 000 compared to November 2022. The average number of hours worked per week was 171.5 million. In calendar adjusted figures, this corresponds to a decrease of 2.7 percent. The number of unemployed people amounted to 400 000, which corresponds to an unemployment rate of 7.1 percent. According to seasonally adjusted and smoothed data, the employment rate amounted to 69.4 percent. Both the number of unemployed and the unemployment rate increased. The unemployment rate amounted to 7.9 percent.

– In similarity to October, we see a subdued development on the labour market in November. This is shown, among other things, by the decrease in the number of temporary employees, says Charlotte Breitz, statistician at the Labour Force Surveys at Statistics Sweden.

Labour force

In November 2023, the number of people in the labour force aged 15–74 amounted to 5 660 000, not seasonally adjusted. The number of women in the labour force was 2 691 000 and the number of men amounted to 2 970 000. The relative labour force participation rate was 74.5 percent. The labour force participation rate for women was 72.1 percent and for men it was 76.8 percent.

For seasonally adjusted and smoothed data, the number of people in the labour force amounted to 5 727 000, corresponding to a labour force participation rate of 75.4 percent.

Employment

There were 5 260 000 employed people aged 15–74 in November 2023, not seasonally adjusted. The number of employed women was 2 505 000 and the number of employed men was 2 755 000. The employment rate amounted to 69.2 percent. The employment rate among women was 67.1 percent and for men it was 71.3 percent.

According to seasonally adjusted and smoothed data, the number of employed persons aged 15–74 amounted to 5 273 000. This corresponds to an employment rate of 69.4 percent.

Employees

In November 2023, there were 4 748 000 employees, according to not seasonally adjusted data. The number of employees among women was 2 378 000 and the number of employees among men was 2 371 000. The number of permanent employees amounted to 4 087 000. The number of permanent employed women was 2 018 000, an increase with 70 000. The number of permanent employed men was 2 069 000. The number of temporary employees was 662 000. This is a decrease with 77 000 persons compared with corresponding month the year before. The number of temporary employed women was 360 000 and the number of temporary employed men was 302 000.

For seasonally adjusted and smoothed data the number of employees amounted to 4 751 000, of which the number of permanent employees was 4 070 000 and the number of temporary employees was 681 000. Compared with recent months, seasonally adjusted and smoothed data shows a decrease in the number of temporary employees.

Hours worked

The average number of total hours worked in November 2023 amounted to 171.5 million per week, according to not seasonally adjusted data. In calendar adjusted figures, this corresponds to a decrease of 2.7 percent compared with corresponding month the year before.

The average number of hours worked according to seasonally adjusted and smoothed data was 155.8 million per week.

Unemployment

In November 2023, the number of unemployed people aged 15–74 years amounted to 400 000, not seasonally adjusted. This corresponds to an unemployment rate of 7.1 percent. The number of unemployed women amounted to 185 000 and the number of unemployed men was 215 000. The unemployment rate for women amounted to 6.9 percent and for men it was 7.2 percent. The number of long-term unemployed, unemployed for at least 27 weeks, amounted to 145 000. The number of long-term unemployed women were 64 000 and the number of men were 81 000. The number of unemployed young people aged 15–24 amounted to 116 000. The youth unemployment rate was 18.6 percent. Among unemployed young people, 74 000 were full-time students.

Compared with recent months, the number of unemployed among people aged 15-74 increased and amounted to 454 000, according to seasonally adjusted and smoothed data. The unemployment rate also increased and amounted to 7.9 percent. Among young people aged 15–24 the number of unemployed amounted to 151 000 and the unemployment rate was 22.1 percent. Compared with recent months, seasonally adjusted and smoothed data shows an increase in the unemployment rate among young people.

Unused labour supply

Unemployed people, underemployed people and latent job seekers together constitute the unused labour supply. In November 2023, the unused labour supply averaged 21.0 million hours per week. This is an increase with 2.1 million hours compared with corresponding month previous year. The unused labour supply corresponds to 525 000 full-time employments with 40-hour work weeks.
