Sweden's wealth reached all-time high at the end of 2024

Statistical news from Statistics Sweden 2025-06-19 8.00

Swedish national wealth increased in 2024 and amounted to SEK 40,170 billion at the end of the year, which is the highest level measured so far.

”After the temporary decline in national wealth in 2023, we saw an upturn again in 2024. As a result, a new all-time high value was reached by the end of 2024. The peak in wealth value is mainly due to significant increases in the value of financial assets. Natural resources also had strong growth in 2024”, says Dunia Malezai, economist at Statistics Sweden.

The wealth in non-financial assets, which includes, among other things, natural resources, inventories and buildings, increased in 2024 from SEK 34,702 billion to SEK 35,763 billion. The wealth in financial assets, such as shares, deposits and tenant-owned apartments, increased from SEK 88,031 billion to SEK 95,584 billion. The value of outstanding liabilities, reflecting the same categories as financial assets but recorded on the liabilities side, increased from SEK 85,526 billion to SEK 91,177 billion.

Since 2010, the National Wealth has increased by 144 percent. The increase is mainly due to financial assets, which has increased by 148 percent during the period. Non-financial assets have also increased, by 111 percent. At the same time, total liabilities have increased by 134 percent, which has dampened the growth in national wealth.

Sweden's wealth is mainly owned by households

The majority of Sweden’s total wealth is owned by households, who hold approximately 69 percent of the total net wealth. This is followed by public sector, which owns 21 percent. The corporate sector (reported as financial and non-financial corporations) and non-profit institutions serving households own 7 and 3 per cent of the total wealth, respectively. The distribution of wealth by sector has changed since the beginning of the time series.

"At the beginning of the time-series and until the beginning of the 1990s, wealth was relatively evenly distributed between households, corporations and the public sector. During the 1990s, household share increased drastically at the expense of the public sector and corporations. Since then, the household share has continued to increase and by the end of 2024, households owned almost three-quarters of total wealth," says Emil Hermansson, economist at Statistics Sweden.

Household wealth continues to grow faster than income

At the end of 2024, net wealth per capita amounted to SEK 2,615,093. Gross national income (GNI) per capita was SEK 354,391 at the same time.

"Households' total wealth has gone from being just over twice as large as annual income in the 1980s, to being nearly seven times as large as total income in 2024. This clearly shows that wealth development has been stronger than income growth since the early 1980s”, says Emil Hermansson, economist at Statistics Sweden.
