From classroom to career – women and men stuck in old patterns

Statistical news from Statistics Sweden 2025-06-18 8.00

Young women and men tend to make different educational choices as early as in upper-secondary school. These differences are also visible in working life, where many occupations have a strong female or male predominance. Only a small percentage of women and men find themselves in sectors with an equal sex distribution.

Today, new gender statistics are published, highlighting gender representation in schools, occupations and entrepreneurship.

"The statistics reflect a society where women and men tend to carry out their education and careers in different sectors", says Anneli Åkerman, advisor in gender statistics at Statistics Sweden.
