Export prices fell and import prices rose in December 2019

The Producer Price Index decreased by 0.5 percent between November and December 2019. In the same period, prices on the import market increased by 0.9 percent and decreased on the export market by 1.2 percent. Prices on the domestic market remained the same. Domestic supply prices, that is, producer prices on the domestic market and import prices together, increased by 0.5 percent between November and December.

Changes during the last month

On the export market, the main contributors to the decrease included lower prices for electricity, basic metals, and paper and paperboard.

The main contributor to the increase on the import market was higher crude oil prices; higher prices for food products was also a contributor. The increase was offset by lower prices for basic metals and electricity.

Higher prices for steam and air conditioning supply services, food products and electrical equipment contributed upward on the domestic market, while lower prices on electricity and waste collection services contributed downward.

Changes during the last year

The Producer Price Index annual rate in December was 1.3 percent (1.2 percent in November). The annual rate was 5.2 percent on the import market and 2.0 percent on the export market. The annual rate was 0.6 percent on the domestic market and 3.0 percent for domestic supply prices.

Changes in exchange rates

An appreciation or depreciation of the Swedish currency lowers or raises export and import prices in Swedish krona. According to Swedish Customs’ exchange rates, from November to December, the Swedish krona depreciated by 0.7 percent against the pound sterling, by 0.4 percent against the US dollar, and by 0.1 percent against the Norwegian krona. The Swedish krona appreciated by 0.1 percent against the Danish krona and against the euro.

In the last year, the Swedish krona depreciated against the pound sterling by 8.2 percent, against the US dollar by 7.4 percent, against the euro by 4.0 percent, and against the Danish krona by 3.9 percent. The Swedish krona appreciated against the Norwegian krona by 0.3 percent.
