Producer prices in May unchanged

The Producer Price Index was unchanged between April and May 2019. In the same period, prices increased on the export market by 0.3 percent and on the import market by 0.4 percent. Prices decreased by 0.3 percent on the domestic market. Domestic supply prices, that is, producer prices on the domestic and import markets together, increased by 0.1 percent between April and May.

Changes during the last month

Higher prices on motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers and on chemicals and chemical products have contributed to the rise of the export price index. On the domestic market, a price decrease on electricity and district heating was the main contributor to the downturn. An increase in crude oil prices, basic pharmaceutical products and chemicals and chemical products contributed upward on the import market.

Changes during the last year

The Producer Price Index annual rate in May was 3.5 percent, which is the lowest annual rate since February 2018. On the export and import market, the annual rate was 3.5 percent and 2.5 percent respectively and 3.6 percent on the domestic market. The annual rate of domestic supply prices was 3.0 percent.

Changes in exchange rates

An appreciation or depreciation of the Swedish currency lowers or raise export and import prices in Swedish krona. According to Swedish Customs’ exchange rates, from April to May, the Swedish krona depreciated against the Norwegian krona by 1.2 percent and against the US dollar and the euro by 0.5 percent. The Swedish krona appreciated against the British pound by 0.8 percent.

In the last year, the Swedish krona has weakened, mainly against the US dollar, by 9.6 percent, but also against the British pound by 0.2 percent, against the euro and the Norwegian krona by 0.7 percent and the Danish krona by 0.1 percent.
