Private enterprises have increased operations by 32 percent since 2010

Activities in health care, education and social services were produced for nearly SEK 960 billion in 2014. This is an increase of SEK 20 billion compared with the previous year. The privately run enterprises produced activities for about SEK 166 billion of the total SEK 960 billion. This means that about 17 percent of the activities are produced by privately run enterprises.

Since 2010 total activities in health care, education and social services have increased by 15 percent. The activity produced by privately run enterprises has increased by 32 percent.

Large regional differences of purchased activities

On average for the entire country, municipalities and county councils bought activities for 12 percent of the total cost. There are large regional differences: purchased activities in Stockholm County amounted to 23 percent, while in Norrbotten purchased activities only amounted to 4 percent.

Almost one thousand new education enterprises

In 2014 the number of enterprises in health care, education and social services has increased by 1 800 enterprises to 59 000. The number of employees in these enterprises was about 1.2 million. This means that about one out of every four employees in Sweden work in the welfare sector.

Definitions and explanations

Municipalities´ purchase of activities refers to activities and contracting where there is a contract or agreement with another producer for activities which the municipality would otherwise have conducted by themselves. County councils' purchase of activities is similarly defined.
