The total municipal tax rate decreases in 2026

The total municipal tax rate will decrease on average in 2026 and will amount to 32.38 percent. The residents of 45 municipalities will get a lower total tax rate in 2026, either through a decrease in the regional tax rate or in the municipality tax rate. In 16 municipalities, the tax increases depending on the rise in the regional or municipal tax rate.

The tax is raised in one municipality and lowered in 27

Herrljunga will raise the municipal tax rate by SEK 0.2 in 2026. In 27 municipalities, the municipal tax will be lowered.

– Lekeberg municipality lowers the tax rate the most, by SEK 1.0. Next comes Haninge, which lowers it by SEK 0.5, followed by Höör and Karlshamn, which each lower it by SEK 0.3, says Peter Gärdqvist at Statistics Sweden (SCB).

Two regions will change the tax rate in 2026

Region Stockholm lowers the regional tax by SEK 0.05 in 2026. This means that residents in the 26 municipalities of county of Stockholm will see reduced taxes, in addition to the municipal tax cuts that some of the Stockholm municipalities are also implementing. In the county of Västerbotten, the regional tax rate will rise by SEK 0.5. The other regions maintain the same rate as in 2025.

Österåker will continue to have the lowest total municipal tax rate

The total municipal tax rate is the sum of the municipal tax rate and the regional tax rate. The national average is 32.38 percent. Österåker has had the country's lowest total tax rate eight years in a row, and in 2026 it amounts to 28.93 percent. The residents of Dorotea have the highest total tax rate, where it amounts to 35.65 percent. The difference between the municipalities with the highest and lowest total municipal tax rate is thus SEK 6.72 per SEK 100.

– The residents of 45 municipalities will get a lower total tax rate in 2026, either through a decrease in the regional tax rate or in the municipality tax rate, says Peter Gärdqvist. In 16 municipalities, the total tax will be higher, of which 15 are due to Västerbotten’s increase in the regional tax.

Tax rates that are published in this statistical news release are based on data submitted to the Swedish Tax Agency by December 5th 2025. Any tax rates reported to the Swedish Tax Agency after this date are not included in this item of statistical news and will be published in January.
