Taxes from private persons increased by SEK 23 billion

Statistical news from Statistics Sweden 2016-02-04 9.30

Taxable earned income for natural persons (individuals) increased by SEK 58 billion for the tax declaration year of 2015, which refers to income for 2014. This means an increase of 3.2 percent to a total of SEK 1 893 billion.

Taxes and fees increased by SEK 40 billion and amounted to SEK 865 billion compared to the previous tax declaration year. The increase was mainly due to the municipal income tax that increased by SEK 21 billion and amounted to SEK 603 billion, as well as the national tax on capital income which increased by 23.5 percent and amounted to SEK 69 billion.

Tax reductions increased by close to SEK 17 billion and amounted to SEK 245 billion. The tax reduction for income from employment increased the most (known as earned income tax credit). The increase was SEK 14.4 billion and amounted to SEK 100 billion. This increase was mainly due to the fifth introduction of the tax reduction for income from employment. In total, the final tax after reductions increased by SEK 23 billion and amounted to SEK 620 billion.

Definitions and explanations

The Tax Procedure Act (2011:1244) has replaced among other things the Tax Payment Act (1997: 483) which means that the concept of tax year has ceased and has not been replaced with a new concept. Today the legislation is based on the concept of tax year, which corresponds to income year and is the year before the tax declaration year. The declaration year 2015 thus refers to income for the year 2014, and the declaration year 2014 refers to income for 2013.

Natural persons refer to private persons and estates of deceased persons. Legal persons include limited companies, economic associations, non-profit organisations, and similar.

”Other taxes and fees” for natural persons include social security contributions for self-employed persons, special wage/salary taxes, general wage tax etc. ”Other taxes and fees” for legal persons include special wage/salary taxes, tax on returns etc. Previously, VAT could be reported on the income declaration and then this item was also included here, but that possibility disappeared as of tax declaration year 2014/income year 2013.

The information also includes natural or legal persons who do not have a place of domicile in the country.
