46 percent of enterprises conducted innovation activities

The latest survey of innovation activities in Swedish enterprises shows that 46 percent of the enterprises conducted innovation activities during 2012–2014. This is a lower share than before and it is because the survey included more industries. When the results with the same population are compared the share of enterprises conducting innovation activities decreased from 53 to 50 percent.
The decrease of enterprises engaged in innovation activities was among small enterprises. The share of enterprises with 10–49 employees that conducted innovation activities decreased by 3 percentage points between 2010–2012 and 2012–2014. The decrease is not statistically significant.

1) Construction (NACE 41–43), sales and repair establishments for motor vehicles and motorcycles (NACE 45), legal and accounting activities; activities of head offices; management consultancy activities (NACE 69-70, other professional, scientific and technical companies (NACE 74) and administrative and support service activities (NACE 77–82) were included in the survey for the first time.
5 percent of enterprises had public sector contracts requiring innovation
30 percent of the enterprises in Sweden had a contract during 2012–2014 to provide goods or services to public sector organisations in Sweden. Enterprises in water collection, treatment and supply (NACE 36) had the highest share of providing goods and services. 71 percent of these enterprises provided products to public sector organisations in Sweden. Providing goods or services to foreign public sector organisations was not as common, 3 percent of the enterprises had such contracts. Institutes for scientific research and development (NACE 72) had contracts with foreign public sector organisations to a greater extent than others, 16 percent.
Most of the contracts with public organisations in Sweden did not involve innovation activities. About 14 percent of the enterprises answered that they had undertaken innovation activities as part of a contract. 5 percent of the enterprises said that one or more of their contracts specifically required innovation. Among institutes for scientific research and development (NACE 72), 25 percent answered that they had a contract requiring innovation.

Highest number of enterprises with registered trademark in wholesale
The results show that 8 percent of the enterprises registered a trademark during 2012–2014. wholesale (NACE 46) had the highest number of enterprises with registered trademark. However, institutes for scientific research and development (NACE 72) had the highest share of enterprises with registered trademarks . More than half, 52 percent, of the institutes for scientific research and development (NACE 72) applied for a patent during 2012–2014.
29 percent cooperated with others
Among the enterprises with innovation activities for product and/or process innovation, 29 percent cooperated with others during 2012–2014. Suppliers were the most common cooperative partner, followed by clients or customers from the private sector and competitors. Only cooperation with other enterprises within the same groups increased compared with the previous survey. According to the enterprises, suppliers were the most important cooperation partner.

Enterprises carrying out innovation activities include:
- Enterprises that have introduced a new product and/or process innovations during the period 2012–2014
- Enterprises that have introduced organisational innovations during the period 2012–2014
- Enterprises that have introduced marketing innovations during the period 2012–2014
- Enterprises that during the period 2012–2014 have abandoned or suspended the development of new products or processes before completion
- Enterprises that at the end of 2014 had ongoing development activities of new products or processes that are not yet finished
