New registrations, July 2020

Impact of COVID-19 behind 4 percent drop in new registration of cars in July

Statistical news from Statistics Sweden 2020-08-04 9.30

In July 2020, 23 804 passenger cars were registered for the first time, 4.6 percent less than in July last year, according to the Transport Analysis monthly official statistics on new registrations. This decrease is most probably due to the ongoing coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, which means that comparison with the same period a year ago should be made with caution.

Passenger cars defined as a “klimatbonusbil”, that is, electric vehicles, plug-in hybrids that emit less than 70g CO2/km, and gas cars (natural, bio- and methane gas), accounted for 27.9 percent of new passenger car registrations in July. Diesel cars accounted for 29.5 percent of new passenger car registrations, down by 8.4 percentage points from the corresponding month a year ago. Passenger cars that are plug-in hybrids, or that run on ethanol or natural gas, accounted for 26.5 percent of new registrations in July, compared with 12.0 percent in the corresponding period in 2019.

Changes introduced in the bonus malus system on 1 January 2020 affect comparisions with the previous year throughout 2020.

In July, 21 562 passenger cars were de-registered, which means that the passanger car fleet increased by 2 242 vehicles in total. In recent years, the number of exported vehicles has increased significantly, although there may be large variations from month to month. So far this year, exports have decreased by 12.6 percent compared with the same period a year ago.
