New registration of cars decreased by 5 percent in October

In October 2020, 29 037 passenger cars were registered for the first time, 4.8 percent less than in October last year, according to the Transport Analysis monthly official statistics on new registrations.

Passenger cars defined as a “klimatbonusbil”, that is, electric vehicles, plug-in hybrids with CO2 emissions of less than 70g/km, and gas cars (natural, bio- and methane gas), accounted for 35.7 percent of new passenger car registrations in October. Diesel cars accounted for 15.2 percent of new passenger car registrations, down by 14.4 percentage points from the corresponding month a year ago. Passenger cars that are plug-in hybrids, or that run on ethanol or natural gas, accounted for 29.1 percent of new registrations in October, compared with 12.6 percent in the corresponding period in 2019.

Changes introduced in the bonus malus system on 1 January 2020 affect comparisons with the previous year throughout 2020.

In October, 23 114 passenger cars were de-registered, which means that the passenger car fleet increased by 5 923 vehicles in total. In recent years, the number of exported vehicles has increased significantly, although there may be large variations from month to month. So far this year, exports have decreased by 11.4 percent compared with the same period a year ago.

In October, there were 4 060 new registrations of lorries, down by 13.0 percent from the corresponding month a year ago. Among new registrations of lorries, there were 3 456 light goods vehicles with a weight of up to 3.5 tonnes, which is a decrease of 13.3 percent, and 604 heavy goods vehicles with a weight of over 3.5 tonnes, which is a decrease of 11.7 percent compared with October 2019. Light goods vehicles are covered by the bonus malus system.

New registrations of passenger cars between January and October 2020 decreased by 16.2 percent compared with a year ago. Thus far in 2020, there were 49 933 new registrations of diesel cars in total, a decrease of 47.2 percent compared with the corresponding period in 2019.

New registrations comprise all vehicles that were entered into the register during the month. These registrations differ from new registrations in BIL Sweden’s reports. BIL Sweden's data only contains data on cars of the latest three model years and cars that are not directly imported.
