Students from Energy programme have strong position on labour market

Statistical news from Statistics Sweden 2015-01-28 9.30

Of all the programmes in upper secondary school, the Energy programme had the highest level of establishment on the labour market. Three years after upper secondary school, 74 percent were established on the labour market.

Other upper secondary programmes with high levels of establishment on the labour market were the Vehicle engineering programme (72 percent) and the Construction programme (68 percent). The lowest level of establishment (40 percent) of all the programmes was among those who studied the Arts programme. The lowest level of establishment among the vocation programmes were the Food programme, the Media programme and the Child care and recreation programme.

Those who have been classified as studying at institutions of higher education or in other studies were not included in these statistics.

Studies after upper secondary school were most common among those who studied the Natural science programme

The upper secondary programme that had the highest share of students in higher education three years after completing upper secondary education was the Natural science programme. Seven out of ten of these persons were studying in higher education. Slightly less than half of those who studied the Social science programme or the technology programme were in higher education. The lowest proportions of students in higher education had been in the Vehicle engineering programme and the Construction programme.

Women establish themselves on the labour market to a lesser extent than men

Of all those who left upper secondary school in the 2008/09 academic year, 32 percent were established on the labour market three years later. Men were established on the labour market to a greater extent than women, 39 percent of the men and 26 percent of the women were established. Instead, women studied in higher education to a greater extent than men. Of all the women, 40 percent were in higher education while the corresponding proportion for men was 28 percent.

The greatest difference on the level of establishment (excluding students) between men and women was in the Use of natural resources programme. The level of establishment for men was also clearly higher than the level for women in the Construction programme, the Vehicle engineering programme and the Energy programme.

Definitions and explanations

Establishment on the labour market three years after upper secondary school is a register study. It describes labour market status, level of establishment, the most common occupational areas and educational orientation in higher education three years after completing upper secondary education.

The population includes those who left upper secondary school in the 2008/09 academic year and who were registered in Sweden three years later. The statistics are presented for the 17 national programmes that existed during the 2008/09 academic year.

The labour market status of persons is calculated from information based on individuals based on several sources of data. A person can be classified according to six different categories: establishment on the labour market, uncertain position on the labour market, weak position on the labour market, outside of the labour market, university students and other students.

To make it easier to compare programmes of varying sizes of the proportion who were classified as students, the level of establishment is also presented. The level of establishment shows the distribution of persons who are not classified as studying in the categories: established on the labour market, uncertain position on the labour market, weak position on the labour market and outside of the labour market.
