  • Households in rented dwellings spend largest share of their income on housing

    In 2024, about 23 percent of the disposable income was used for housing costs. The shares differ between different types of tenure. Households in rented dwellings spent about 27 percent of their disposable incomes on housing. Households in owner-occupied apartments spent 21 percent, while households in owner-occupied one- or two-dwelling houses spent 18 percent.

    Households’ median costs for housing was about SEK 96 000 in 2024. For households living in owner-occupied one- or two-dwelling buildings, the median cost was SEK 115 000, while households living in rented dwellings paid SEK 91 000 and households living in tenant-owned dwellings paid SEK 94 000.

  • Swedish households spend one fifth of their disposable income on housing in 2021

    Households’ median costs for housing was about SEK 78 000 in 2021. For households living in owner-occupied one- or two-dwelling buildings, the median cost was SEK 86 000, while households living in rented dwellings paid SEK 77 000 and households living in tenant-owned dwellings paid SEK 73 000. To pay for housing, households use on average a fifth of their disposable income.

  • Households paid SEK 75 000 for housing in 2020

    Households’ median costs for housing was about SEK 75 000 in 2020. For households living in owner-occupied one- or two-dwelling buildings, the median cost was SEK 79 000, while households living in rented dwellings paid SEK 75 000 and households living in tenant-owned dwellings paid SEK 72 000.

  • Households in mid-life pay most for their housing

    Average housing costs of households are SEK 80 000 per year. Housing costs vary in different forms of tenure. Households in owner-occupied one- or two-dwelling houses pay SEK 87 000 on average, while households in rented dwellings and owner-occupied apartments pay SEK 75 000 for their housing.
