  • Foreign direct investment positions by ultimate investing economy in 2024

    The geographical distribution of foreign direct investment (FDI) positions in Sweden varies depending on the reporting principle applied. FDI Statistics can be presented either by the immediate counterpart country, where the direct investor is domiciled, or by the country of the ultimate controlling owner, i.e., the country in which the ultimate controlling parent company is resident. The latter presentation principle is internationally referred to as the Ultimate Investing Economy (UIE), which provides a more accurate picture of where investments are ultimately controlled.

  • Swedish portfolio investments abroad continue to increase

    During the third quarter of 2025, the current account surplus amounts to SEK 93.2 billion, an increase of SEK 5.1 billion compared to the third quarter of 2024. At the same time, the financial account showed net lending of SEK 155.8 billion, with portfolio investments being the strongest contributing factor.

  • Direct investment assets increased both in Sweden and abroad in 2024

    At the end of 2024, the value of Swedish direct investment assets abroad amounted to SEK 6 003 billion, which is an increase of 7 percent compared to the previous year. Foreign direct investment assets in Sweden increased by 5 percent and amounted to SEK 4 701 billion at the end of 2024. Income on Swedish direct investment assets abroad amounted to SEK 561 billion in 2024, which is an increase by 1 percent compared to 2023. In the same period, income on foreign direct investment assets in Sweden increased by 3 percent and amounted to SEK 300 billion.

  • Swedish portfolio assets continue to grow abroad

    Swedish holdings in foreign portfolio assets increased in the second half of 2024. Total holdings amounted to SEK 10 981 billion, which was an increase of 6 percent compared to the end of the first half of 2024. Holdings in shares accounted for the largest percentage increase. Holding in investment fund shares and debt securities did also increase, but not to the same extent as shares.
