Investments decreased by SEK 9 billion in the second quarter of 2020, compared to the second quarter of 2019

The investment rate among enterprises slowed significantly in the second quarter of 2020 compared to the second quarter of 2019. Mining, and quarrying and manufacturing enterprises decreased investments by SEK 1.9 billion, amounting to SEK 14.1 billion. Investments by real estate enterprises also decreased by SEK 1.9 billion, amounting to SEK 34.2 billion. However, mining, and quarrying and manufacturing enterprises increased investments by SEK 1.4 billion (11 percent) between the first and second quarter of 2020. Investments by enterprises in real estate industry increased by 3 percent between the first and second quarter of 2020.

The outcome of the Investment Survey shows that enterprises’ investments decreased by 10 percent in total, which corresponds to SEK 9 billion, in the second quarter of 2020 compared to the second quarter of 2019. Total investments in this period amounted to SEK 80.1 billion, an increase of 4 percent compared with the first quarter of 2020.

In percentage terms, the business services industry noted the largest decrease in investments, 45 percent, compared to the second quarter of 2019 and amounted to SEK 3 billion. The trade in goods industry also noted a decrease in investments of 23 percent, and amounted to SEK 3.8 billion. The real estate industry noted a decrease in investments of 5 percent, and amounted to SEK 34.2 billion. The construction industry noted decreased investments by 10 percent, and amounted to SEK 2.4 billion, and the industry for transportation and storage decreased investments by 22 percent, and amounted to SEK 4.9 billion.

Despite the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, many industries increased investments between the first and second quarter of 2020. The energy, water and sewer industry increased most, by 19 percent, and amounted to SEK 11.7 billion. The mining, and quarrying and manufacturing industry increased investments by 11 percent, and amounted to SEK 14.1 billion. Investments also increased in the transportation, construction and real estate industry in the second quarter, compared with the first quarter of 2020.

Enterprises invested mainly in machinery and equipment. This class of assets accounted for 49 percent of total investments in the quarter. This is a decrease of 2 percentage points compared with the second quarter of 2019. New construction, extensions and rebuilding of existing buildings accounted for 27 percent of total investments. Housing accounted for 18 percent of total investments, which is a increase of 2 percentage points compared with the second quarter of 2019. Purchases of buildings and facilities accounted for 7 percent of total investments in the second quarter.

Definitions and explanations

All the data in this statistical news is reported in current prices. Comparisons have been made with the corresponding quarter in 2019, and with the previous quarter in 2020.

These statistics are based on data from Statistics Sweden’s Business Register database. All enterprises with at least 200 employees are included, while enterprises with between 20 and 199 employees are sampled. In some activities, enterprises with between 5 and 199 employees are sampled. Enterprises in the mining, quarrying and manufacturing industry sector with between 10 and 19 employees are taxed based on investment information from enterprises with between 20 and 49 employees.

The sectors included in this survey are B–G, SNI 49 (excl. 49.32), 51–53, 58, 61–63, 64.1, 65, 68 (excl. 68.204), 71–75, and 77–82 according to NACE Rev 2.
