Order and turnover in industry, January 2018:

Orders to industry decreased in January

Statistical news from Statistics Sweden 2018-03-06 9.30

Total orders to industry decreased by 0.5 percent in January 2018 compared with December 2017, in seasonally adjusted figures. Compared with January 2017, total orders to industry increased by 8.3 percent, in calendar adjusted figures.

The development in total orders to industry was positive in both the domestic and export market. The reason for an increase in both markets in seasonally adjusted figures compared with December, and a decrease in total orders, is that each series is seasonally adjusted individually, based on a model with tailored estimates. This may lead to discrepancies between total orders and markets. Compared with December, the domestic market increased by 1.1 percent and the export market increased by 0.3 percent, both in seasonally adjusted figures.

On an annual basis, total orders to industry increased by 8.3 percent compared with January 2017, in calendar adjusted figures. Orders received from customers in Sweden increased by 8.8 percent and orders received from customers abroad increased by 8.3 percent.

The base year is now 2015, as a result of Eurostat regulation and EU harmonisation.

The figures for January are preliminary. Since the previous publication, the seasonally adjusted monthly development in December has been revised up by 0.2 percentage points to a monthly development of minus 0.5 percent compared with November. The calendar-adjusted development in December has been revised up by 0.5 percentage points to a monthly development of 6.3 percent compared with December 2016.

For a more comprehensive understanding of the statistics, it is relevant to analyse the effects of seasonal and calendar adjustments on the statistics.

Revisions

When the orders index and the turnover index for a new month are published, the indices for previous months are also revised. The material is normally revised for between two and four months retroactively, depending on which month of the quarter is the reference month. The whole previous quarter is revised when publishing the first and second months of a quarter. Calendar-adjusted figures, seasonally adjusted figures and trend figures are revised from January 2000 onwards.
