Entrance into the labour market after upper secondary school:

Employment most common after upper secondary school

Statistical news from Statistics Sweden 2014-11-17 9.30

Employment was the most common activity after upper secondary school both one year and three years after completed education. This was regardless if the young people finished upper secondary school with or without a leaving certificate.

Two out of three young people who finished with a leaving certificate from a vocational program had employment as their main activity three years after upper secondary school. The corresponding proportion among young people who took a study preparation programme was one out of three.

Higher education studies was the next most common activity after employment among young people who finished with a leaving certificate. Among those young people who finished with a leaving certificate from upper secondary school in the 2010/11 academic year, three out of ten had studies at universities and institutions of higher education as their main activity. The proportion for those who took the study preparation programme was five out of ten.

Difficult to find work that corresponds with studies...

Four out of ten employed young people who finished with a leaving certificate from the vocational programmes had employment within another area than that which their upper secondary school education was directed towards. This was the case for both one and three years after completed education. The proportion was even greater among those who had studied in year three but did not have a leaving certificate.

...but eight out of ten were satisfied with their employment

Most of the young people were satisfied with their employment and found that upper secondary education was the right level to do their jobs.

Unemployment more common among those without leaving certificates

During the three years that have passed since the young people finished their upper secondary education in the 2010/11 academic year, six out of ten who had finished with a leaving certificate were unemployed at some time. Two out of ten had chosen to study further because they could not find work. Among those who had studied during year 3 but did not receive a leaving certificate, seven out of ten had been unemployed at some time. Four out of ten had chosen to study further because they could not find work.

The situation is the same for those young people who finished upper secondary school in the 2012/13 academic year. The difference with this group compared to the older group is that not as many young people who studied during year 3 but did not receive a leaving certificate had chosen to study because they could not find work.

Definitions and explanations

Entrance into the Labour Market is a sample survey that has been conducted since 1996. The survey is conducted every other year and follow-up normally occurs three years after completed education. The aim is to describe entrance into the labour market for those who completed upper secondary school.

The information was collected via postal surveys and Internet surveys as well as telephone interviews. The data collection was conducted during April to June in 2014. The sample included roughly 20 000 persons and the response rate was 49 percent. The survey was conducted by Statistics Sweden partly on behalf of and in cooperation with the Swedish National Agency for Education.
