Augmented innovation - A microdata analysis of AI and innovation

Augmented innovation

Statistical news from Statistics Sweden 2024-03-07 8.00

Enterprises and government institutions that use AI are more innovation active than those that do not use AI, as shows in a new microdata analysis based on data from multiple surveys conducted by Statistics Sweden.

Artificial intelligence (AI) has the potential to accelerate research and innovation, lead to economic growth and help solve complex societal challenges like the green transition. The report uses data from multiple surveys on research and development (R&D), innovation and ICT usage to, for exploratory purposes through microdata linking, highlight connections and synergies between AI use and innovation in enterprises and the government sector.

The report describes the use of AI among and within enterprises as well as how innovation activity and the use of AI technologies relate to one another. Enterprises’ R&D in the field of AI during 2019 and 2021 is described and put in relation to total R&D and the general trend between these years. The survey Innovation in the government sector, which are statistics under development, enables analyses of how the government sector’s systematic innovation activity affects innovation in the workplaces and the use of AI.

The results indicate that advanced digitalisation, through the use of AI, and innovation both are phenomena that enhance each other. It is more common that organisations that use AI are innovation active than those that do not use AI, a result that is found for both enterprises and government institutions.
