At the end of August, total liabilities in debt securities amounted to SEK 9 631 billion, up by SEK 81 billion from July.

Developments in August 2026 in brief

Increased liabilities in bonds

  • At the end of August, total liabilities in debt securities amounted to SEK 9 631 billion, of which bonds accounted for 83 percent and money market instruments accounted for 17 percent.
  • During the month, liabilities in bonds increased by SEK 146 billion, while the liabilities in money market instruments decreased by SEK 65 billion.
  • The liabilities denominated in Swedish Krona increased by a total of SEK 62 billion and the liabilities denominated in foreign currencies increased by SEK 19 billion.
  • The annual growth rate for total debt securities liabilities was 2.3 percent in August, an increase by 1.1 percentage points from July.

Increased borrowing by monetary financial institutions in August

  • In August, it was monetary financial institutions that accounted for the largest increase in debt securities, with total debt increased by SEK 105 billion.
  • Non-financial corporations also increased their debt securities, by SEK 9 billion, during the same period.
  • However, Sveriges Riksbank and the government (through Swedish National Debt Office) decreased their debt securities in August, by SEK 8 billion and SEK 31 billion respectively.

Maturity structure

  • Debt securities valued at SEK 1 652 billion will reach maturity within six months, excluding certificates issued by Sveriges Riksbank. Approximately 56 percent of these securities are denominated in foreign currency.
  • Debt securities from monetary financial institutions accounted for 67 percent of the total maturity value within six months (excluding certificates issued by Sveriges Riksbank), of which the majority is issued in foreign currency.

Green debt securities

  • Green debt securities amounted to SEK 1 124 billion in August, up by SEK 15 billion from July.
  • Monetary financial institutions accounted for the largest increase during the month, up by SEK 10 billion.
  • Monetary financial institutions are still the largest issuer of green debt securities, in total of SEK 523 billion. However, local government issue the largest share of green debt securities in relation to their total outstanding amount (42 percent).

Statistics Sweden’s monthly publication on Securities issues covers total outstanding volume and maturity structure for debt securities issued by Swedish issuers. It describes the development and conditions of Swedish enterprises’ debt securities borrowing.

Revisions

A major reclassification between the MFI non-covered sector and the MFI covered sector was implemented for the reference period from January 2022 to June 2026, with the update implemented in July 2026.

Securities issues are compiled monthly. Revisions usually occur, mostly for the previous month but sometimes for older periods as well.

Definitions and explanations

A debt security is a financial instrument issued to finance operations and that provides the holder with interest payments over a specified period. Debt securities may be issued by, for example, central governments, municipalities, banks and corporations. Examples of debt securities include bonds and short-term securities.

A money market instrument is a short-term debt security with an original maturity of up to one year. Examples of money market instruments include treasury bills and certificates.

A bond is a debt security with a longer maturity, typically exceeding one year. The holder of a bond receives interest payments over a specified period and normally receives repayment of the principal amount when the bond matures.

Green debt securities are money market instruments and bonds issued to finance projects that are classified as environmentally and climate sustainable. To be classified as green, the debt security must comply with the principles or requirements of at least one of the following frameworks or regulatory standards

  • ICMA Green Bond Principles (GBP)
  • Climate Bonds Initiative
  • EU regulatory framework for green bonds or green projects

Monetary Financial Institutions (MFIs) include banks, housing credit institutions, finance companies, institutions financing municipalities and companies, monetary securities companies, and monetary investment funds (money market funds).

MFI – covered include debt securities issued by monetary financial institutions. These securities are typically backed by mortgage loans, providing investors with additional protection. Only institutions authorised by Finansinspektionen (the Swedish Financial Supervisory Authority) may issue covered securities.

MFI – non covered include debt securities issued by monetary financial institutions that are not backed by specific assets as collateral for investors.

Non-financial corporations include enterprises that produce goods or provide services, but whose principal activity is not the provision of financial services. Examples of such corporations include companies operating in the industrial, wholesale and retail trade, construction, and real estate sectors.

Other financial include financial corporations whose principal activity is to provide financing, offer financial services or conduct investment activities, excluding banks, insurance corporations or pension institutions. Examples of financial corporations in this sector include credit market companies, fund management companies, securities firms, investment companies, captive financial institutions and financial holding companies.

In the statistics on debt securities, the annual growth rate measures the percentage change in outstanding amounts in the current month compared with the corresponding month of the previous year. It is used to describe developments over time and to facilitate comparisons across periods.
