Borrowing in debt securities decreased

Statistical news from Statistics Sweden 2019-10-17 9.30

Total Swedish liability in debt securities amounted to SEK 7 834 billion at the end of September. This is a decrease of SEK 71 billion compared with the end of the previous month.

Borrowing in both bonds and money market instruments has decreased since the end of August. Total outstanding liability in bonds amounted to SEK 6 667 billion at the end of September, down by SEK 43 billion. This decrease is primarily accounted for by bonds denominated in foreign currency, in which the debt stock for bonds denominated in US dollars dropped in value by SEK 27 billion. Net transactions account for SEK 29 billion of this decrease in bonds denominated in US dollars, and the remaining part was due to the currency exchange effect.

For money market instruments, liability in securities amounted to SEK 1 167 billion at the end of September. This is a decrease of SEK 29 billion since the end of August. The decrease is primarily due to securities denominated in Swedish kronor valued at SEK 19 billion.

Debt stock in the bank sector decreased

In the bank sector, liability in securities amounted to SEK 1 793 billion at the end of September. This is a decrease of SEK 28 billion compared with the previous month. Bonds accounted for SEK 27 billion of this decrease, and the remaining part was accounted for by money market instruments. Bonds denominated in US dollars in the bank sector decreased by SEK 29 billion. The corresponding decrease in money market instruments amounted to SEK 9 billion.

Structure of maturity

In the next three months, debt securities valued at SEK 1 004 billion will reach maturity. Money market instruments account for SEK 846 billion of this value.

Securities denominated in foreign currency valued at SEK 395 billion will reach maturity in the next three months. Securities denominated in US dollars and euros account for SEK 238 billion and SEK 88 billion of this value respectively.
