Preliminary income and tax statistics 2016:

Incomes up 13 percent in five years

Income increased between 2011 and 2016, and most for women. The median income of women increased by 15 percent compared with 10 percent increase for men.

The median income, measured as total income from employment and business, for persons aged 20 years and older in 2016 was SEK 270 000. For men the income was SEK 309 000 and for women SEK 237 000. This means an inflation-adjusted increase of 13 percent since 2011. For women, the increase was almost 15 percent while the increase for men was just over 10 percent.

The increase over the last 25 years, i.e. between 1991 and 2016 was 54 percent; 64 percent for women and 45 percent for men. In 1991, women's income was 68 percent of men's income. By 2016, the corresponding proportion had increased to 77 percent.

All information for the 2016 income year is preliminary. Final information will be published in January 2018.

Total income from employment and business consists of income from employment and income from business. In addition to earned income, income from employment also includes income from pensions, sick pay, labour market support and other taxable compensation from the Swedish Social Insurance Agency.
