Preliminary income and tax statistics 2017:

Incomes increased more for women than for men

Between 1991−2017, total earned income increased by 56 percent, in constant prices. The median income increased more among women, by 67 percent, compared with 47 percent among men.

Preliminary income statistics for 2017 show that the total median income for persons aged 20 years and older was SEK 279 000. Women’s median income was SEK 244 500, while men’s median income was SEK 318 900.

Since 1991, the total earned income has increased by 56 percent. Incomes have increased more among women than among men, 67 percent compared with 47 percent. This means that women’s incomes in relation to men’s incomes have increased during the current period, from 67.6 percent in 1991 to 76.6 percent in 2017. In total, income development was stronger for women during 19 of the 26 years since 1991.

In the 2000s, incomes increased by 32 percent for the entire population, that is, 35 percent for women and 27 percent for men. This progression has been stronger for women during 13 of the 18 years in the period 2000−2017.

Definitions and explanations

All information for the 2017 income year is preliminary. Final information will be published in January 2019. The statistics refer to the registered population on 31 December each year.

Total earned income consists of income from employment and income from business.

In addition to earned income, income from employment also includes income from pensions and taxable transfers from the social security system, such as sick pay, parental allowance, unemployment benefits and so on.

Income from business activities derives from professional business activities, unless the income is defined as capital or services.

Total earned income does not include non-taxable compensation such as housing allowance, child allowance, economic support or study allowance. Capital income is not included.
