More young people in the labour force

In October 2025, the number of young people in the labour force increased by 54 000, and amounted to 643 000, not seasonally adjusted. There were 5 214 000 employed people and the number of hours worked per week averaged 178.1 million. The number of unemployed people increased by 71 000 to 509 000, corresponding to an unemployment rate of 8.9 percent, an increase of 1.1 percentage points. The seasonally adjusted and smoothed employment rate was 68.9 percent. Both the number and the share of unemployed people increased, seasonally adjusted and smoothed. The unemployment rate stood at 9.0 percent.

- In October, the labour force participation increases, mainly among young people, aged 15–24. We also see that the number of unemployed is increasing and that unemployment remains at a higher level, says Louise Stener, statistician at the Labour Force Surveys at SCB.

Labour force

In October 2025, there were 5 723 000 people aged 15–74 in the labour force, not seasonally adjusted. This is an increase of 93 000 people compared to the corresponding month in the previous year. There were 2 748 000 women in the labour force, up 61 000 and the number of men amounted to 2 975 000. The labour force participation rate was 74.9 percent, an increase of 1.0 percentage points. Among women, the labour force participation rate was 73.0 percent and among men, it was 76.7 percent. The number of young people aged 15–24 in the labour force increased by 54 000, and amounted to 643 000 and the labour force participation rate was 52.4 percent, an increase of 3.7 percentage points.

Seasonally adjusted and smoothed data show an increase in the number of people in the labour force compared to recent months and amounted to 5 775 000, corresponding to a labour force participation rate of 75.6 percent. Among young people aged 15–24, the number and share of the labour force increased compared to the previous months and amounted to 701 000, with a labour force participation rate of 57.3 percent.

Employment

The number of employed people aged 15–74 amounted to 5 214 000 in October 2025, not seasonally adjusted. There were 2 497 000 employed women and the number of employed men was 2 717 000. The employment rate stood at 68.2 percent. The employment rate among women was 66.3 percent and among men it was 70.1 percent.

The number of employed people aged 15–74 amounted to 5 258 000, seasonally adjusted and smoothed. This corresponds to an employment rate of 68.9 percent.

Employees

In October 2025, there were 4 713 000 employees, according to non-seasonally adjusted data. 2 345 000 employees were women and 2 367 000 employees were men. The number of permanent employees amounted to 4 116 000. 2 039 000 women and 2 077 000 men were permanent employees. The number of temporary employees was 597 000, of which 306 000 were women and 290 000 men.

There were 4 758 000 employees according to seasonally adjusted and smoothed data, of whom 4 119 000 were permanent employees and 640 000 were temporary employees.

Hours worked

Total hours worked in October 2025 averaged 178.1 million per week, according to non-seasonally adjusted data.

Seasonally adjusted and smoothed data show an increase in the number of hours worked compared to recent months. The number of hours worked averaged 155.6 million per week.

Unemployment

In October 2025, 509 000 people aged 15–74 were unemployed, not seasonally adjusted, an increase of 71 000 people compared to the corresponding month in the previous year. This corresponds to an unemployment rate of 8.9 percent, an increase of 1.1 percentage points. There were 251 000 unemployed women and 258 000 unemployed men. The unemployment rate stood at 9.1 percent for women and at 8.7 percent for men. The number of people in long-term unemployment (unemployed for at least 27 weeks) amounted to 174 000. There was 81 000 long term unemployed among women, and 93 000 among men. The number of unemployed young people aged 15–24 amounted to 146 000 and the youth unemployment rate stood at 22.7 percent. Among unemployed young people, 106 000 were full-time students.

Compared to recent months, the number of unemployed people aged 15–74 increased to 518 000, according to seasonally adjusted and smoothed data. The unemployment rate also increased, amounting to 9.0 percent. Among young people aged 15–24, the number of unemployed increased compared to the previous months and amounted to 170 000, with an unemployment rate of 24.2 percent.

Unused labour supply

Collectively, unemployed people, underemployed people and latent jobseekers constitute the unused labour supply. In October 2025, the unused labour supply averaged 24.7 million hours per week, representing an increase of 2.7 million hours compared to the corresponding month one year ago. The unused labour supply corresponds to 618 000 full-time jobs with 40-hour working weeks.
