Unemployment remains at a higher level

In September 2025, there were 5 238 000 employed people, not seasonally adjusted. The number of hours worked per week averaged 174.9 million. The number of unemployed people was 476 000, corresponding to an unemployment rate of 8.3 percent. The seasonally adjusted and smoothed employment rate was 68.9 percent and the unemployment rate stood at 8.7 percent.

– Unemployment remained at a higher level in September as well. Temporary employment increased at the same time as permanent employment decreased, seasonally adjusted and smoothed, says Åsa Zakrisson, statistician at the Labour Force Surveys at SCB.

Labour force

In September 2025, there were 5 713 000 people aged 15–74 in the labour force, not seasonally adjusted. There were 2 712 000 women in the labour force and men amounted to 3 001 000. The labour force participation rate was 74.8 percent. Among women, the labour force participation rate was 72.1 percent and among men it was 77.4 percent.

According to seasonally adjusted and smoothed data, there were 5 766 000 people in the labour force, corresponding to a labour force participation rate of 75.5 percent.

Employment

The number of employed people aged 15-74 amounted to 5 238 000 in September 2025, not seasonally adjusted. There were 2 489 000 employed women and 2 749 000 employed men. The employment rate stood at 68.6 percent. The employment rate among women was 66.2 percent, and among men it was 70.9 percent.

The number of employed people aged 15–74 amounted to 5 262 000, seasonally adjusted and smoothed, which corresponds to an employment rate of 68.9 percent.

Employees

In September 2025, there were 4 734 000 employees, according to non-seasonally adjusted data. 2 335 000 employees were women and 2 399 000 employees were men. The number of permanent employees amounted to 4 074 000, of whom 1 979 000 were women and 2 095 000 were men. The number of temporary employees amounted to 660 000. 356 000 women were temporary employees and among men, the number of temporary employees was 304 000.

There were 4 765 000 employees according to seasonally adjusted and smoothed data, of whom 4 120 000 were permanent employees and 645 000 were temporary employees. Compared to recent months, the number of permanent employees decreased, while the number of temporary employees increased.

Hours worked

Total hours worked in September 2025 averaged 174.9 million per week, according to non-seasonally adjusted data.

According to seasonally adjusted and smoothed data, the number of hours worked averaged 154.8 million per week.

Unemployment

In September 2025, 476 000 people aged 15–74 were unemployed, not seasonally adjusted. This corresponds to an unemployment rate of 8.3 percent. 224 000 women and 253 000 men were unemployed. The unemployment rate stood at 8.2 percent for women and 8.4 percent for men. The number of people in long-term unemployment (unemployed for at least 27 weeks) amounted to 158 000. 72 000 women and 86 000 men were in long-term unemployment. The number of unemplyed young people aged 15–24 amounted to 155 000 and the youth unemployment rate stood at 23.8 percent. Among unemployed young people, 89 000 were full-time students.

According to seasonally adjusted and smoothed data, there were 504 000 unemployed people aged 15–74, corresponding to an unemployment rate of 8.7 percent. The unemployment rate among young people aged 15–24 amounted to 24.0 percent. The number of unemployed young people was 167 000, which is an increase compared to recent months.

Unused labour supply

Collectively, unemployed people, underemployed people and latent jobseekers constitute the unused labour supply. In September 2025, the unused labour supply averaged 24.2 million hours per week. The unused labour supply corresponds to 605 000 full-time jobs with 40-hour working weeks.
