Lower annual rates on all markets in October

The Producer Price Index, that is, producer prices on the domestic and export markets together, increased by 9.5 percent from October 2017 to October 2018. In the same period, prices increased by 14.1 percent on the import market and by 12.5 percent on the export market. In October, the annual rate on the domestic market was 6.8 percent.

Changes during the last year

The annual rate on all markets has decreased compared with September. On the export market, the annual rate was 12.5 percent (13.4 percent in September). This is the first annual rate decrease since December 2017. The decrease was offset by an 65.5 percent annual increase in electricity prices.

On the import market, the annual rate was 14.1 percent (15.2 percent in September). Furthermore, the prices on the domestic market have increased by 6.8 percent compared with the same period last year. The annual rate for electricity prices on the domestic market was up 38.2 percent, compared with 33.2 percent in September. Domestic supply prices have increased by 10.5 percent on an annual basis.

Changes during the last month

Producer prices decreased by 0.3 percent between September and October. In the same period, prices decreased on the import and the export market by 0.8 percent under the influence of a stronger Swedish krona. On the domestic market, prices increased by 0.3 percent. Domestic supply prices, that is, producer prices on the domestic and import markets together, decreased by 0.3 percent between September and October.

The main contributor to the downturn on the import market was computer, electronic and optical products. On the export market, lower prices on motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers contributed substantially to the downturn. On the domestic market, a seasonally normal price increase on district heating contributed to the rise.

Lower prices on electicity contributed to the downturn on all markets.

Changes in exchange rates from September to October 2018

An appreciation or depreciation of the Swedish currency has a tendency to lower or raise export and import prices in Swedish krona. According to Swedish Customs’ exchange rates, the Swedish krona appreciated against the US dollar by 2.6 percent, against the Danish krona and the euro by 1.4 percent, and against the British pound by 0.2 percent. The Swedish krona depreciated against the Norwegian krona by 0.4 percent.

Definitions and explanations

New product classification

Producer and Import Price Index is reported in accordance with both SPIN 2007 and SPIN 2015 in the statistical database. Both product classifications will be available during 2018. In 2019, price indices will only be available in accordance with SPIN 2015. Users are recommended to start using SPIN 2015. The differences between the two classifications are minor.
