Foreign trade in services continued to recover

The recovery of foreign trade in services was strengthened in the third quarter of 2021. As in the second quarter, the largest increase was noted in travel. However, consumption abroad has not yet returned to pre-pandemic levels.

Foreign trade in services increased

Foreign trade in services continued to grow broadly in the third quarter of 2021. Exports of services rose by 14 percent and imports of services rose by 22 percent, compared with the corresponding quarter a year ago.

Sweden’s exports of services were valued at SEK 168 billion in the third quarter of 2021. Imports of services amounted to SEK 176 billion. The large increase in imports led to a negative net balance of SEK 8.5 billion. The corresponding figure for the same quarter a year ago was positive and amounted to SEK 1.9 billion.

Travel increased significantly

The tight grip of the COVID-19 pandemic on the travel industry eased significantly in the third quarter of 2021. Compared with the corresponding quarter last year, travel exports, that is, consumption abroad, increased by 81 percent and imports increased by 83 percent. Despite this, consumption abroad has not yet returned to pre-pandemic levels.

On the export side, charges for use of intellectual property rose by 7 percent. Telecommunication, computer and information services increased by 10 percent. Other business services, including research and development services, administrative services and marketing services, rose by 5 percent. Transports increased by 26 percent.

On the import side, charges for use of intellectual property rose by 30 percent. Telecommunication, computer and information services increased by 11 percent and other business services rose by 12 percent. Transports increased by 17 percent.

These statistics are reported quarterly and form the basis for both the National Accounts and the current account in Balance of Payments.
