Investment funds 2nd quarter 2018:

Households’ fund wealth increased

Statistical news from Statistics Sweden and Swedish Financial Supervisory Authority 2018-08-22 9.30

Households’ directly-owned fund wealth contributed SEK 32 billion to total fund wealth in Swedish-registered investment funds. At the end of June 2018, total fund wealth amounted to SEK 3 979 billion, an increase of SEK 174 billion compared with fund wealth in the previous quarter.

Total net investments decreased

Total net investments decreased in the second quarter, but remained positive, SEK 13 billion in total. A sector-wise breakdown shows that net investments increased mainly in Swedish financial enterprises, by approximately SEK 16 billion, while net sales among foreign ownership amounted to approximately SEK 4 billion. It should be noted that unit-linked funds and premium pension savings as well as holdings by financial corporations that may have households as final owners are included in the financial enterprises sector.

Inflow in the second quarter was largest among other funds, followed by equity funds and bond and money market funds.

Households’ investments in funds

Households’ net investments in the second quarter amounted to SEK 1 billion, while directly-owned fund wealth in Swedish-registered funds increased by SEK 32 billion. A positive market development is the main contributor to this increase. Households’ fund wealth amounted to SEK 765 billion in the second quarter of 2018.

Households’ net investments were largest in fund-of-funds.

Number of active funds

Funds have been closed and new funds have been opened in the second quarter 2018. Some funds have been reclassified. There are now 792 active funds.

Exchange rate development

The average exchange rate for one euro was SEK 10.27 in the second quarter of 2018, compared with SEK 9.96 in the first quarter of 2018. The Swedish krona was weakened against the US dollar, with an average exchange rate of SEK 8.79 compared with SEK 8.11 for one US dollar in the previous quarter.

Investments in foreign currency are affected by the development of the exchange rate. The development of the krona against the euro in the quarter has contributed to an increase in the value of investments. Investments in US dollars were affected positively in the quarter, as the krona was weakened against the US dollar.

Definitions and explanations

The statistics cover Swedish-registered investment funds. Both mutual funds and special funds are included in the statistics. The category ‘Other funds’ includes funds that could not be classified in any other category, such as hedge funds.
