Household consumption nearly unchanged in December 2023
Statistical news from Statistics Sweden 2024-02-09 8.00
Household consumption increased by 0.1 percent in December 2023, measured in seasonally adjusted figures, compared with November 2023. Compared with December 2022, household consumption increased by 0.1 percent, measured in constant prices and working day adjusted figures. In the fourth quarter of 2023, consumption remained unchanged compared with the same period a year ago, measured in constant prices and working day adjusted figures.
Please note that for periods between April 2023 and November 2023 the statistics has been corrected. Read more under ”Correction of the statistics”.
The largest weighted positive contribution came from the sector Housing, electricity, gas and heating which increased by 2.5 percent in constant prices compared with December a year ago.
Transport and retail sales and service of motor vehicles accounted for the largest weighted negative contribution to total consumption and decreased by 10.7 percent in constant prices compared with December a year ago.
Correction of the statistics:
The statistics have been corrected for periods April 2023 to November 2023. This after it was detected that double counting of objects occurred in these periods when computing the retail sales index, which is used as a source för calculating the household consumption indicator. The correction affects mainly sector Retail trade, mostly food and beverages and thus total household consumption. Please see the statistical news for the retail sales index December 2023.
Below graph shows the corrected annual development, working-day adjusted and constant prices, compared to the previous published series for the period January 2023 until November 2023.
