Insurance companies' equity investments exceed SEK 6,000 billion

During the fourth quarter of 2025, the market value of insurance and occupational pension companies' investment assets increased just under 1 percent to a new record level of SEK 8,262 billion. By year end holdings in equities surpassed SEK 6,000 billion for the first time.

─ The quarterly increase in stocks extended the record for total investment assets. This marked the third consecutive quarter with a new record level for total investments, says Malcolm Svensson Rothmaier, economist at Statistics Sweden.

The quarter in brief

During the fourth quarter of 2025, insurance and occupational pension companies' holdings in shares and participations increased 2,5 percent to SEK 6,058 billion. For the full year 2025 the increase were slightly more than 5 percent from SEK 5,763 billion the previous turn of the year.

─ The new record high – over 6,000 billion – comes after a generally positive quarter and year for equity indices, says Malcolm Svensson Rothmaier.

Life insurance and occupational pension companies

Increase in Swedish shares: Swedish shares increased 4 percent during the quarter to SEK 1,140 billion. That corresponds to a climb of nearly 10 percent during the year that passed. 

Non-life insurance companies

Increase in housing credit institutions bonds: Bonds from housing credit institutions grew 10 percent during the quarter and 27 percent for the full year 2025 to SEK 59 billions by year end.

─The quarterly development was mainly due to one institution. The development for the full year were more broad based, says Malcolm Svensson Rothmaier.
