Record quarter for unit linked insurance

During the second quarter of 2026, the market value of insurance and occupational pension companies' investment assets increased 8.3 percent to a new record of SEK 8,939 billion. Strong equities performance in the quarter helped equity related holdings and unit linked insurance gained 14.5 percent to SEK 2,665 billion.

 ─ It was the biggest quarterly increase for unit linked insurance in the statistics dating back seven years to 2019, says Malcolm Svensson Rothmaier, economist at Statistics Sweden.

The quarter in brief

During the second quarter of 2026, insurance and occupational pension companies' holdings in shares and participations increased4 percent to SEK 6,657 billion.

In the quarter the net transactions to shares were SEK +56 billion and +9 billion to bonds. The flows were positive to government and foreign bond.

─ There were an outflow of SEK 23 billion from Swedish housing credit institutions bonds in the quarter after -25 billion in the first quarter, says Malcolm Svensson Rothmaier.

The stock value in bonds increased by 2,0 percent in the quarter to SEK 1,729 billion. In Swedish housing credit institutions bonds it decreased by 5.1 percent to SEK 345 billion. Foreign bonds increased 3,5 percent to SEK 719 billion.

Life insurance and occupational pension companies

  • Decrease in housing bonds: Holdings in Swedish housing credit institutions bonds decreased by 6.4 percent to SEK 288 billion.

Non-life insurance companies

Decrease in householder's and homeowner's claims: The claims paid in householder's and homeowner's insurance decreased by 5.4 percent in the first half year of 2026.

─ The development follows a full year of 2025 with a decrease of record-breaking 15 percent, says Malcolm Svensson Rothmaier.
